Men helpers 'fear paedophile tag' (BBC News)

This article on the BBC news website comes as no great surprise to me.
Given the hysteria fueled by the press, it's of little surprise that many men avoid contact with other people's children.
I wonder just how many paedophiles are there? What proportion are male?

the latest research by the nspcc found that of the 16 000 people polled, 9% had been abused before the age of 12, which equates to numbers in the millions of kids being currently harmed and hundreds of thousands of active paedophiles - the ones doing the stuff, not including the ones watching it on the internet etc... It worried me that at these kind of numbers, perhaps the prediliction to harm kids is as much a part of the human population as being gay or straight. Historically, its only relatively recently that sleeping with kids has been regarded as wrong - in Roman times having a little boy on the side was seen as a form of birth control so you weren't sleeping with your wife and getting her knocked up all the time. The consideration that this is seems to be so much a part of human nature makes me sad.

I HAVE BEEN A MOTHER FOR 20 YEARS AND BELIEVE ME THERE ARE NOT THAT MANY REAL PAEDOPHILES.
THE MAN I LOVE HAS BEEN BRANDED A PAEDOPHILE AND I KNOW HE IS NOT ONE.HE HAS BEEN FALSELY ACCUSED AND WRONGLY CONVICTED.
THE REAL PAEDOPHILES ARE GETTING AWAY WITH IT BECAUSE THEY KNOW HOW TO COVER THEIR TRACKS
BUT IT IS THE HONEST CARING MEN WHO ARE BEING IMPRISONED FOR SEXUAL CRIMES THEY DID NOT COMMIT DUE TO POLICE TRAWLING METHODS AND THE LURE OF COMPENSATION FOR SO CALLED VICTIMS. THE PROSECUTION WILL PRESENT A JURY WITH NOTHING BUT LIES AND THE ACCUSED IS NOT ALLOWED A PROPER DEFENCE AND HEY PRESTO YOU ARE CONVICTED OF CRIMES THAT NEVER HAPPENED!
MY ADVICE TO ANY MAN IS STEER WELL CLEAR OF ANY KID THAT IS NOT YOUR OWN AND IF YOU WORK WITH KIDS THEN NEVER ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE ALONE WITH THEM.

I FEEL THE LAW NEEDS TO BE CHANGED TO HELP THE FALSELY ACCUSED AND WRONGFULLY CONVICTED WHO HAVE COMMITTED NO CRIMES BUT ARE SERVING LENGTHY SENTENCES IN PRISON NONETHELESS. AT LEAST 200 SIGNATURES ARE REQUIRED FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO TAKE NOTICE OF MY PETITION THERE ARE 70 SIGNATURES TO DATE.
THIS IS A TERRIBLE THING THAT COULD HAPPEN TO ANY LAW ABIDING CITIZEN THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN.

I'm no lawyer, but
I mostly agree with the content, but feel the right answer/solution is to go through some sort of appeals process. Surely that would be the better approach - as your husband could (assuming the appeal was won) clear his name, as opposed to having a criminal record etc.
(I speak out of ignorance over the details of the case in question).

He wanted to appeal after the trial but He was told by the trial barrister that there was no legal or precedential grounds for appeal against the conviction and no legal funding available. He was told that his innocence was not enough reason to get an appeal against conviction according to english law. So he appealed against the sentence as that was all he could do. But the three appeal judges just upheld the decision of the trial judge. He is on this crazy indeterminate sentence for public protection which means he can be detained for up to 99 years if he does not address his offending behaviour... what hope then for then for an innocent man like him?
He is trying to get a new solicitor but it could take years and years if he maintains his innocence and he would perhaps get out sooner if he were to lie and pretend that he is a paedophile as the prison want him to do the sex offenders programme. They say he is in denial as they have to uphold the decision of the courts and wiil not accept that he is innocent. The more he protests his innocence the more they will say he is refusing to address his offending behaviour...and he may never be released
Some say the law is an ass but I would go as far as saying it is a whole stable full of them.
