Today Kat entered labour, and after a little bit of faffing (car headlights decided to pack in; cue frantic call to Jenny etc) we arrived at Redditch's hospital at just after midnight (sunday morning).
Fast forward nearly twelve hours, and out popped Rowan at 11:44am. On the way, we had two (or three?) failed attempts at giving Kat an epidural, and her being put on a drip to fix some dehydration. In the end, anyway, after much effort he entered the world, to become one of 6 billion (or so) individuals.
Kat's staying in hospital with Rowan overnight, while I've been relegated back home. Perhaps I'm supposed to get some sleep.
I've put some photos online here ; I'm still trying to understand quite what it is to be a dad - my mind is filled with mixed emotions about how wonderful it is, and then on the other hand how it's too good to be true, and how utterly dependent a small wrinkled baby is on Katherine and myself.
Anyway, I'm quite tired, so had better go to bed.
(Jenny - thank you for being there to help Kat and I through it!)

JAy

congratulations to all 3 of you! Its quite a ride isn't it? So I guess u were right about those contractions last night ehh??
He dont half look like kat ( sorry David)
Its great being a dad!
hmmm
I thought he might have my hair...
I remember reading somewhere that new born babies tend to look like their mothers - it's some sort of 'survival mechanism' to cope with the fact that (historically?) daddy might not be the biological daddy, and may not know!.
Wow
I'd like to say something more profound and meaningful, but I the best I think I can manage is saying "Wow" or "Congratulations" repeatedly and seemingly unendingly.
Seriously, congratulations. Don't forget to collect some friends and sink an ale or 3 and send my best wished to Kat and Rowan.
Adam
Thanks!
Hi Adam,
I feel sort of the same; I have difficulty in finding words to express how I feel...
Anyway, house to tidy etc, car headlights to fix...
Baby
Congratulations. Life will never be the same again, but in a good way!!
Congrats
Kat, Dave,
Congratulations and very well done to Kat in particular. Rowan is a very fortunate kid to have such wonderful parents. Also, he pulls a fantastic expression for a one day old.
Alex
he wouldn't stop moving!
Hi Alex,
Rowan wasn't particularly keen on stopping moving - which wasn't much of a surprise given how active he was in the womb.
Kat did really well, and I'm (obviously) proud of her! Although her pregnancy went well, I'm definitely g;ad I'm a Dad and not a Mum!
Congratulations
Congratulations to you both!
Congratulations guys!
Congratulations guys!
Congratulations and best
Congratulations and best wishes.
Congrats
Glad it all went well, congratulations++
Congratulations to you both
Congratulations to you both
Congratulations
Congratulations - was that exactly the due date then?
Due date met....
Yes
Wonderful
Well done Kat on the safe arrival of your baby son Rowan. You've given him a great name. Smashing pictures.
Cathie
Congrats
Well done; and good luck for the next few weeks. Hope you're awake enough to enjoy every minute :)
Congratulations
Well done to all three of you! The reason you get to go home and Kat stays in hospital is so you can put in one last days work before paternity leave!
Lee says well done too.
Woohoo!
Claire is too scared to post on forums but sends her congratulations and said to say "Rowan is very cute"
Personnally I cant think of anything profound to say either except to echo everyone elses congratulations to all three of you.
So congratulations, and I hope you enjoy parenthood loads.

Ooer
You look pretty shocked in all those pictures, David! Almost as if should you look away for 30 seconds, Rowan will go POOF! and vanish ;) Glad things went well, is eleven hours labour quite a lot? Soon you'll have more sleepless nights, and wish babies came equipped with Advanced Lights-Out Management (ALOM) :P
shocked!
Yes, I was. It's very overwhelming to finally meet 'something' you've had sort-of-contact with over the last nine months... I'd felt him move every night for the last 2-3 months, and finally I saw him.
I did keep thinking it was too good to be true, and something would go wrong ... but thankfully not!
I don't know if it's a long labour or not; I'm just glad I'm not a woman :)
Congratulations
Congratulations to both of you, the little fellow looks very suspicious of the whole thing!
indeed - suspicion was rife!
For the first hour or so after coming out, his eyes were darting everywhere, along with his legs/arms making plenty of movement.
He had quite long nails to start with, which caused a few minor sore-like things - but they've been sorted now.
Wonderful news!
WOW!!!! Wicked guys, I hope the three of you have spent the last week getting to know each other with as little as possible stress. It's the best thing imaginable* and now you understand just what the rest of us where on when talking about our own offspring, words can never do that feeling justice can they. :)
*wiping a tear from my eye
Thank you!
Yes, I do truly understand what all those other Dads have been on about now :)
I've only just looked back at your site and...
...well, I'd forgotten you both were expecting and the due date was towards the end of January, but he's finally out.
Out little one was born on 5th December 2007 and he's spent most of his life up to now in Good Hope hospital, Birmingham Children's Hospital and now back to Good Hope again.
You're hopefully one of the lucky ones that has no complications.
I know what people have been saying about that feeling that is indescribable.
It's true, there really are a huge flood of emotions that occur when you become a dad.
Good luck, and one day I might finally get to meet you at one of the PHPWM meetings.
Poor you!
Yes, thankfully we had no complications - I wish you all well, the worst we've had is when Rowan wasn't initially keen on feeding - which made me worried enough!
Congratulations!
Lovely to hear about Rowan!
As a dad to two wee ones myself I know it can be tough but can also tell you that they "wierdly" grow up all too quickly. You won't have that wee baby for too long guys... enjoy every minute of it and remind yourselves of how temporary this period of your lives is whenever the going gets tough.
:-) Enjoy the little blighter!
Derrin.
