Go faster

On Wednesday, I finally picked up by road-ish bike (Ridgeback) after it had it's first service. My physic abilities had indicated it probably needed a service after the brakes had pretty much worn out, so I took the opportunity to get clip on pedals and have a 6 month service.

Unfortunately, the bike shop decided it needed £150 worth of 'repairs' (new brake pads, chain, cassette and labour).

However, the good news is that I can power myself up hills, and make myself feel quite sick by doing so. So yesterday, I managed to get from Bromsgrove to Redditch in ~ 25 minutes. I suspect I can go quicker, however my legs are a bit broken at the moment as they've not become used to weekly 10+ mile runs.

Road-ish bike

I've never looked back since I got my road-ish bike (Trek) (all of my bikes had previously been ATBs/ATB-like). I just need to learn to stay on it now :) I've also cycled to my mum's and grandparents', which is much better than the 3 buses/trains it would otherwise take, and it means I see them more often. I get to go over some hills too!

road bike ++

I remember riding to work on my MTB - the noise from the fat tyres, the inability to go particularly quick because the gears are so low... etc etc. However, it's braking distance was excellent at least!

It is far more fun cycling to work on my Ridgeback, especially if i go the back way, where the road is effectively empty of traffic, and it's nice being able to 'power' up a hill with the front wheel bouncing off the ground as you do so - so, clip_ons++, bike++ etc.

When buying the bike, I did try a more racing style bike, with even thinner tyres (and probably higher gears), but couldn't stand the thought of being on something with such skinny tyres. But settled for something slightly more hybrid-ish - it has thin tyres, is quite light, but doesn't have the bent over handle bars.

Hmm... I'm rambling.
