Counting Down

The time has come! $Herbert - now being called "the baby" as there is no way I am calling the poor child herbert when he (or possibly she) comes out - is officially full term (they're ready to be born any time from the end of the 37th week, which was sunday) and I'm waiting impatiently for the contractions to start (and as I write this I get what I think is a large braxton hicks).

The waiting is just horrible. While I'm obviously scared of the pain etc, and in the back of my mind there are the obvious "will he be ok" worries, I just want the pregnancy bit to be over, and the baby bit to start. I'm seriously bored, can't walk for more than 15 minutes as I've got a (very misshapen) bowling ball or something strapped to my front permanently. I'm trying to do all the things I should be, like walking every day (not going out in the cold today though) to encourage the little sod to engage (He definitely dropped down about 3 weeks ago, but at our last midwife's appointment next week he apparently hadn't engaged completely so I can't get too excited about that).

Its hard to balance getting plenty of rest with not wearing myself out, and I can't really get too involved with work again as I'll be essentially disappearing for at least a few weeks any time now, so I really don't know what to do with myself. Today I am getting some work done, but shouldn't really be. I'm fed up of TV, can't settle down to read (not even trash) and have trouble staying comfortable.

Arrggh!!

Wow thats come round so

Wow thats come round so soon! Julie and I were exactly the same at that stage, bored with the pregnancy and just wanted the little bugger to come out and see us. Thoughts are with you.

Have you tried one of them pregnancy balls? Julie found them to be really useful for speeding things up

Birth Balls?

I've got one but I don't find it very comfortable. I'm trying to walk for 15-20 mins a day as that really makes my bump feel heavy, and I get headbutted in places nobody should ever be headbutted! I also alternate between having my legs up to alleviate my poor swollen legs and feet and having my knees lower than my hips which should encourage him to get into the right position.

Apart from that, there's not much else to do but whinge :-)

And it doesn't feel soon - it feels like its taken forever!

While there are millions of

While there are millions of 'old wives tales' about how to encourage a baby to engage, I believe hot curries and sex are popular ones. Best wishes to all 3 of you :)

Scientific basis

Some of them are old wives tales, most of them have some scientific basis:

Sex is supposed to be a good one, as semen contains a hormone (prostaglandin) that we were told encourages the cervix to ripen and wikipedia claims encourages uterine contraction (get softer so the baby can get out) and orgasm produces oxytocin, which encourages contractions. (bet you all wanted to think about that!)

Hot curries (and ditto for castor oil - yuck) are more of a wives tale as all they do is (rather unpleasantly) help you ... errm... clear the area to make more room for the baby to drop down.

Fresh pineapple also encourages production of oxytocin, but apparently you need to eat about 3 in one day for it to really work, so I'm not putting too much faith in that one as 1/4 is about as much as I can manage in one go.

Walking is a good one too, as the weight of the baby encourages the cervix to ripen - hence my trying to walk every day.

nipple stimulation

Apparently nipple stimulation also helps.....

blow jobs work better than

blow jobs work better than sex according to my mum!

your mum is wrong?

Kat thinks it's better if applied directly to the 'target' area...

Ingesting would surely break down the hormones...

Nurses always know best.

Nurses always know best. Otherwise they wouldn't get the best outfits.

Nurses have the best

Nurses have the best outfits? Surely thats a matter of taste?

.... Off to ask the bird in the Gimp suit some advice

$Herbert

I think at least one of his middle names should be $Herbert, with the dollar sign of course.
