apt-get segfault (with solution)

apt-get segmentation faultsts... 0%

I came across this annoyance the other day, which might have happened at about the same time as the server crashed.

I only noticed the problem a few days later when I thought it would be a good idea to install $something_new...

Solution

cd /var/cache/apt
rm pkgcache.bin srcpkgcache.bin

Running strace on it didn't seem to help; at least it seems I'm not the only one to have suffered this problem

ive just done a fresh install of etch, ive been running into this again and again, and i even did a re-install, then i hit it again, i had never seen a segfault in apt-get, this fixed it, im so relieved.
